Arboris' mission is to preserve biodiversity through the protection and rehabilitation of critical ecosystems. The main focalpoint is set on the endangered flora of Pernambuco and surrounding states, in North Eastern Brazil - South America. The long term protection that Arboris has set out to achieve, will give several endangered species a healthy chance to recover from damages done in the past. In the end, all species will benefit from healthy and diverse ecosystems.

Your donation will make a difference! Biodiversity is one of the most important factors in maintaining a healthy balance of life on earth. Most species require its environment to be composed of a delicate variety of interacting species, in order to supply that species with its basic needs (nutrition, cover, pollination) to survive. By making a donation, we can physically protect and rehabilitate critical ecosystems. Threatening or eradicating one or several links within the biodiversity chain, will eventually result in a steady decline amongst other species, which make up the whole forest. Current practices in South America of targeting several species will present itself in a cascading failure of the entire habitat in question. .

Our program aims at resolving two objectives:
Protection of habitats.Through acquisition and adequate management of key habitats, we can improve the preservation of critical species.
Rehabilitation of land and species.Restoring degraded habitats and systematizing information on critical formations. These activities include the establishment of a laboratory, herbarium and a main nursery. These facilities will double as learning and information centers on the importance of biodiversity and how to rehabilitate degraded environments.

Why restore the Pernambucan Coastal and Interior Forests?

The Atlantic Foresst of South America is the world's most threatened biodiversity hotspot. Once stretching more than 1.2 million square kilometers across Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, the forest retains only 8 percent of its original extent and much of it is found only in tiny and isolated fragments.

Despite all its difficulties to survive, the Atlantic Forest still maintains extraordinary levels of biological wealth. Approximately 70 percent of the Brazilian 176 million people live in areas which used to be Atlantic Forests, and are, to some higher or lower levels dependent upon, or affected by the negative effects of the destruction of these forests.

Our support focuses on the coastal and inland territories of Pernambuco and surrounding states. The coastal forests of Pernambuco have a history of extensive deforestation. One of the first species to be targeted on a large scale in the coastal forests was "Pau Brasil", which was eagerly sought after for its characteristics by Colonial lumber companies. Harvesting these trees caused an immense threat to the existence of that species, and indiscriminate destruction of the Pernambucan coastal forests, in order to gain access to that one branch of species. This tree has become a symbol for our efforts in preserving the biodiversity and endangered flora of Pernambuco.

Comencing in the mid-20th century and continuing into modern times; vast areas of the coastal forests have been cleared for sugarcane plantations, of which several have been abandoned.

Remaining coastal forests are small, covering at most 10 square kilometers. Divided by vast areas of sugarcane plantations and cattle ranches, these small islets don't support a healthy continuance of its species, are thus doomed to disappear, if the appropriate intervention isn't made.

The inland territories are even in a worse condition. There, 95% of the original forests have been cleared for timber, fuel wood, agriculture and cattle ranches. Remaining forests need to be protected immediately, in order to reconstruct a healthy habitat for displaced species.
